LORD'S PRAYER LOG, Part 13:
February 8, 2000
0630 Sunrise. The wind is ESE 15-18G20. The boat remains on track under full mainsail and Jib. Other than very small adjustments to the wind vane to keep the boat on a straight track to Barbados, I have made no changes in heading or sail trim in the last 36 hours. With the wind on the port beam the boat is heeled about 20-25 degrees and she pitches and heaves some in the waves. But there is not much rolling, which is nice. Still, though, it is necessary to hold on with at least one hand and sometimes two while moving about in the cabin or on deck. One can wedge into a spot in the lee bunk or sit on it or do the same on the seats in the cockpit. But trying to sit on the weather bunk down below is risky, as there is little to hang onto and from time to time the motion of the boat will just toss a person right out of that weather berth toward the other side of the cabin. That is a situation in which when one could get hurt so it is best not to sit in that location at times such as this.
1020 While relaxed in the cockpit reading I am interrupted by a rogue wave, which decides to invite itself aboard and join me. Along with a slightly wet book, I find my ankles in 6" of water. But the water and air are warm (both 78), so the experience is actually more pleasant than it might otherwise be and the
water soon drains out the scuppers.
1150 Sighted another vessel - the first in 9 days. This one appears to be a private motor yacht, of perhaps 150 feet in length, headed in roughly a westerly direction - most likely coming over from Europe.
1625 Started engine to charge batteries.
1700 I am soaked down by another rogue wave that joins me in the cockpit.
1753 Sunset.
1800 secured the engine.
1815 The wind increased to 20G25. Eased mainsheet to carry a luff. I will wait & see if I need to tuck in a reef. Showers ahead.
1900 Wind is back to about 15-18.
1930 Position: 18-38N 059-32W. There are 334 NM to Bridgetown.
